May 5, 2025Waterstop Universal Bostik – Effective Waterproofing Membrane for Rapid Leak Sealing
Waterproofing is a critical element in any construction project—whether for new buildings, renovations, or emergency repairs. That’s why it’s worth choosing reliable, professional solutions like Waterstop Universal by Bostik—an advanced waterproofing membrane that, thanks to hybrid technology and instant action, delivers dependable water protection on a wide range of surfaces.
What is Waterstop Universal?
Waterstop Universal is a liquid waterproofing membrane based on MS polymer. It is specifically designed for quick and effective leak sealing, even on highly damp surfaces. Thanks to hybrid technology, it contains no bitumen or solvents, making it safer to use while offering high flexibility and resistance to external conditions.
The membrane begins to work immediately upon application, forming an elastic coating that instantly protects against water ingress. Notably, it does not require priming and can be used even during rainfall—meaning there is no need to halt work in case of sudden weather changes.
Where Can Waterstop Universal Waterproofing Membrane Be Used?
The application range of Waterstop Universal is extremely broad. The product can be used to:
-
Protect surfaces exposed to moisture and rainfall
-
Seal leaks in roofs, gutters, walls, and floors
-
Waterproof external walls
-
Seal water features, tanks, equipment, and pipe penetrations
The membrane adheres excellently to surfaces such as concrete, stone, wood, metals, ceramics, zinc, polystyrene, and rigid PVC.
However, it should not be used on fresh bituminous substrates or on PE, PP, and PTFE plastics.
When applying on bituminous substrates, ensure they are fully cured, as oils released from fresh bitumen can degrade the membrane.
How to Properly Apply Waterstop Universal?
To ensure effective waterproofing, proper substrate preparation is essential. The surface should be cleaned of dust, grease, and other contaminants. A damp substrate is acceptable, but there must be no standing water. Priming is not required, which is a major advantage, especially in emergency repairs.
Apply the product using a foam roller or brush, in two coats, allowing a minimum of 6 hours between applications. Each coat should be at least 1 mm thick. The membrane bridges cracks up to 10 mm wide, and with a 1:1 width-to-depth ratio, it can also effectively seal construction joints.
In corners and wall-to-floor connections, no sealing tape is required, as long as the application is performed carefully with a slight overlap in connection areas. For more demanding situations, embedding sealing tape into the first layer of the product is allowed.
The cured membrane offers moderate UV resistance. In areas directly exposed to intense sunlight, the second coat should be immediately covered with slate granules or quartz sand to ensure long-term durability.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions about Waterstop Universal Bostik
Can Waterstop Universal Bostik be applied to wet surfaces?
Yes. The product can be applied even to heavily damp surfaces, as long as there is no standing water.
Does the surface need to be primed before applying Waterstop Universal Bostik?
No. Priming is not required—the surface just needs to be properly cleaned.
Can Waterstop Universal Bostik be applied during rain?
Yes. The membrane can be applied even during rainfall and starts working immediately upon application.
What materials can Waterstop Universal Bostik be applied to?
It is suitable for concrete, stone, wood, metals, ceramics, zinc, rigid PVC, and polystyrene.
It should not be used on fresh bituminous substrates, PE, PP, or PTFE.
Is Waterstop Universal Bostik suitable for use under ceramic tiles?
Yes. After applying the second layer, sprinkle it with quartz sand (grain size 0.1–0.5 mm), then remove excess sand after 24 hours.
Alternatively, use a bonding primer once the membrane has fully cured.
If bonding directly to the membrane, use only highly flexible tile adhesives.
What are the application conditions and drying time for Waterstop Universal Bostik?
Apply the product at temperatures between +5°C and +35°C.
Allow approx. 6 hours drying time between layers.
Full curing occurs after 24 hours (at 20°C and 50% humidity).
How many layers of Waterstop Universal Bostik should be applied, and what is the consumption rate?
Apply two layers, each with a minimum thickness of 1 mm.
Estimated consumption: 2.3–3.1 kg/m².
Does Waterstop Universal Bostik bridge cracks?
Yes. It bridges cracks up to 10 mm wide.
The optimal joint width is around 4 mm with a 1:1 width-to-depth ratio.
Can the surface coated with Waterstop Universal Bostik be painted?
Yes. After the membrane has fully cured, it can be painted.
A compatibility test is recommended before painting.
How to clean tools and remove stains after using Waterstop Universal Bostik?
Fresh residues can be removed with detergent or acetone.
Cured material must be removed mechanically.
Tools (rollers, brushes) are single-use and not reusable.
