Identifying the source of moisture is one of the first steps in any renovation work. What could be the potential causes?

• The impact of groundwater penetrating walls due to the absence or damage of horizontal and vertical insulation.
• The effect of rainwater (both direct and indirect).
• Moisture caused by inflow water.
• The influence of water and moisture from plumbing and sewage systems.
• Condensation moisture resulting from improper wall insulation, often combined with poor ventilation in rooms.

How to Identify the Source of Moisture?

Observation is crucial in the initial stage. Depending on the source, different symptoms of moisture are visible. The intensity of destructive processes also varies based on the cause of the moisture.

1. Terrain Shape and/or Slope
   The configuration of ground layers or a slope directing rainwater toward the building.
   Effect: Stains on masonry walls.
2. Capillary Water Movement
   The ability of materials to draw water capillarily depends on soil conditions, the type of material, and the diameter of capillaries.
   Effect: A band of moisture at a nearly constant height.
