ABC of General Conditions Required for the Substrate<\/strong><\/h2>\n

When planning to build a house, it is essential to understand the requirements that the substrate<\/strong> must meet, particularly to ensure the correct technical installation of waterproofing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

This is not the first<\/strong> thing that comes to mind when preparing for construction, but poorly prepared substrate<\/strong> is one of the most common reasons why waterproofing fails<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Requirements for the Substrate:<\/strong><\/h3>\n

  1. \n

    Dimensional Tolerances of the Substrate<\/strong>
    a) Newly constructed walls\/structures must meet the dimensional tolerances permitted by ITB (Building Research Institute)<\/strong>.
    b) Existing walls\/structures do not have to comply with dimensional tolerance requirements.
    c) Tank-type waterproofing:<\/strong> The sealing layer is applied directly to the structural element<\/strong>.
    d) Ground-level floors:<\/strong> The substrate should be prepared to meet the required dimensional standards<\/strong> (ITB, DIN 18202, or Merkblatt \u201cTolerances in Building Construction\u201d).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    The substrate is usually moist or even wet<\/strong> \u2013 most modern waterproofing materials tolerate a matte-damp surface<\/strong> (without standing water).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  3. \n

    A highly water-saturated<\/strong> substrate can be pre-sealed<\/strong> using mineral sealing slurries<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  4. \n

    The substrate must be stable and load-bearing<\/strong>, free from cracks.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  5. \n

    Exposed or excavated elements<\/strong> must be thoroughly cleaned and inspected<\/strong> \u2013 remove loose masonry fragments<\/strong>, crumbling mortar, and any material affecting adhesion<\/strong>. Strongly salt-contaminated walls<\/strong> should be mechanically cleaned, and desalination treatments<\/strong> should be considered.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    Gravel nests, cavities, and voids<\/strong> must be filled with system-compatible repair mortars<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  7. \n

    External foundation edges should be rounded or milled<\/strong>. Internal corners should have a cove (fillet)<\/strong> made with system-specific mortar<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  8. \n

    A pressure distribution layer<\/strong> should be applied on horizontal surfaces<\/strong> sealed with bituminous materials<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  9. \n

    Coating-based waterproofing<\/strong> must be applied directly to the structural elements<\/strong> of the building.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    Seal point and linear water inflows<\/strong> before applying waterproofing coatings.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
