It has a <strong>solid or semi-solid consistency<\/strong> and ranges in <strong>color from dark brown to black<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Types of Asphalt<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4><strong>Natural Asphalt<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Natural <strong>asphalt deposits<\/strong> occur in <strong>nature<\/strong>, usually near <strong>crude oil deposits<\/strong>, in the following forms:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Bituminous deposits<\/strong> \u2013 containing <strong>55\u201398% pure asphalt<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bituminous rocks<\/strong> \u2013 most commonly <strong>limestone, dolomite, or sometimes sandstone<\/strong>, which have a <strong>porous structure saturated with asphalt<\/strong>. The <strong>asphalt content<\/strong> in these rocks is approximately <strong>10\u201315% of the rock\u2019s volume<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Natural asphalt is too hard<\/strong> to be used as a <strong>standalone binder<\/strong>. It is <strong>added to petroleum asphalt<\/strong> in amounts of <strong>5\u201315%<\/strong> to <strong>enhance its properties<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Petroleum Asphalt<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>This is the <strong>heaviest fraction obtained after crude oil distillation<\/strong>.
